How It Began

From Humble Workshop to Trusted Name

In 1994, master craftsman David Thornton opened a modest workshop in Collingwood with a single belief: Australians deserved furniture built with the same care and permanence as the heritage pieces they admired in museums and historic homes.

That workshop started with three employees and a commitment to traditional joinery. Today, while we have grown considerably, the founding principles remain unchanged. Every piece that leaves our studio carries forward that original promise of uncompromising quality.

What Drives Us

We believe furniture should outlive its makers. In a world of flat-pack disposability, we champion the opposite approach: materials selected for longevity, joinery designed to strengthen over time, and finishes that develop beautiful patinas with age.

We partner exclusively with certified sustainable forestry operations across Australia. Every tree harvested is replaced, ensuring our craft does not come at the expense of future generations.

Mortise and tenon joints. Dovetails cut by hand. These time-tested methods create furniture that can be repaired and restored, not discarded when fashions change.

Local Craftsmanship

Every piece is made entirely in our Melbourne workshop by artisans who live in this community. We believe in supporting local skills and keeping traditional trades alive.

Twelve Hands, One Standard

Our workshop is home to twelve full-time artisans, each specialising in different aspects of furniture making. Some have been with us for over two decades; others are younger craftspeople learning the trade through our apprenticeship programme.

What unites them is an obsession with detail and a refusal to cut corners. They take personal pride in every piece they touch, often checking in on projects even when working on something else entirely.
